As part of the Neighborhood Leadership Academy, the Economic Development Corporation of Michigan City has invited CommunityWorks to host the Unlocking Neighborhood Gifts workshop as a core experience for every participant.

Over the past two years, more than 50 residents have completed the workshop, each identifying one way they could bring neighbors together and strengthen
community life.

Year One Impact

24 graduates, representing 6 different neighborhoods, launched project ideas such as:

  • A community calendar and social media channels to foster stronger connections
  • Block parties to celebrate neighborhood pride
  • Sidewalk and streetlight improvements
  • Health and wellness initiatives built on local partnerships

Year Two Momentum

25 more residents took part, creating projects to engage youth, strengthen communities, and address gun violence
such as:

  • Midnight Basketball for youth engagement
  • Gardening and recycling education
  • Neighborhood block parties
  • Formation of new neighborhood associations
  • Video gaming and esports outreach
  • A social media group for neighborhood updates

“I realized that I don’t need an army to begin a project in my community, I can be instrumental in getting started.”

Each project starts small, uses the gifts neighbors already have, and creates change through building relationships. To bring this workshop to your city, email us at hello@comm-works.org
